MDDSDD: A Comprehensive Approach in Practice
17 May 2011 | The Hague
On 17 and 18 of May, Pax Ludens held a two-day pilot workshop on the possibilities and limitations of the comprehensive approach in fragile states. It was the first time, representatives of both ministries and non-governmental organizations came together to explore the comprehensive approach in an interactive setting. Representatives from the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Dutch Ministry of Defense, Cordaid, Oxfam Novib, Impunity Watch, Mensen met een Missie, HealthNet TPO, The Dutch Burundi Committee, PUM Senior Experts and the Royal Tropical Institute were present. The workshop used the Dutch development effort in Burundi as a case study for the workshop.
Over the course of the workshop, participants increased their shared situational and mutual awareness of Burundi by gaining insight into each other's roles and activities. They also developed in-depth context analyses from a conflict sensitive perspective, which enabled them to identify possibilities for cooperation and coordination. During the second day of the workshop, participants completed a scenario-based exercise in which they were able to explore the possibilities and limitations of the comprehensive approach in practice.
This workshop has been developed by Pax Ludens in cooperation with HCSS, TNO and Cordaid and is part of the Millennium Project "More than the Sum of its Parts" (MDDSDD). This is a three year endeavor that seeks to operationalize a comprehensive approach to interventions in fragile states and enhance understanding of best and worst practices in a shared environment. The project partners intend to offer this workshop on a comprehensive approach more often in the future.
